Using-da-Vinci-®-to-Treat-Kidney-Cancer

Kidney cancer is an extremely common form of cancer, with nearly 200,000 new cases being diagnosed each year in the United States. Dr. Pedram Ilbeigi, of the Valley Urologic Medical Group, knows that it can be devastating for a patient to find out that they have kidney cancer, but those who have been diagnosed in the Inland Empire have a unique treatment option. Dr. Ilbeigi offers patients the option to use the da Vinci surgical system.

This surgical system which performs a partial nephrectomy has become well known in the Rancho Mirage area. However, before patients start deciding what treatment option is best for them they should first have a solid understanding of what kidney cancer is and how it spreads.

First and foremost, patients should recognize that early detection is key — patients who undergo routine physicals and screenings and catch the cancer early are far more likely to survive. When kidney cancer is detected early, patients have a survival rate of 80 to 100 percent.

Kidney cancer is typically diagnosed when a malignant tumor is found. Benign tumors can be found in the kidney as well, and these masses are non-cancerous. Cysts are the most common form of non-cancerous tumors in the kidney.

However, malignant tumors must be treated before the cancer travels through the blood vessel system. Kidney cancer in particular is known for traveling quickly and easily through the blood vessels. The medical community refers to this type of cancer as renal cell carcinoma.

Patients who have to have cancerous tumors removed from the kidney may want to consider using the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system. This robotic technology assists the surgeon in performing the procedure and offers many different benefits for the patient. Commonly, patients who use this system will find they have less blood loss during the surgery, a lower rate of post-surgical complications and a shorter recovery time.

The da Vinci surgical system is extremely precise and allows the surgeon to target specific internal organs with a high success rate. This system gives the surgeon an option to preserve a healthy, functioning part of the kidney. When this operation is successful, the healthy portion of the kidney can be used in future healthcare treatments. It helps to prevent the recurrence of the cancer and often eliminates the need for patients to undergo dialysis.

Patients who have experienced extreme pain in their side or have found blood in their urine should set up a consultation with a highly-skilled doctor immediately. Kidney cancer can be an intimidating diagnosis, but patients of Dr. Ilbeigi’s often find relief when they hear that their chance of survival is high. Dr. Ilbeigi offers patients at the practice the opportunity to use state-of-the-art technology to ensure they live long, happy, healthy lives.
