Apple Valley men should make their routine visits with the urologist a top priority, because these appointments allow the urologist to perform an examination and talk about any underlying signs and symptoms of issues that might arise in the future.

However, in addition to taking the proper precautions and prioritizing preventative care, men throughout the High Desert region also should be aware of the common urological problems. These concerning symptoms may be a sign of a larger issue, or they may be able to be treated quickly and easily by the physician.

What are Some Concerning Urological Problems for Men?

Blood in semen — It can be startling for a man to find blood in his semen, but it is not necessarily a life-threatening issue. The most common causes of blood in the semen are a sexually-transmitted disease, a urinary tract infection or prostatitis. Blood in the semen also can be a symptom of prostate cancer, so it is important to talk with your urologist as soon as possible if you notice this symptom.

Blood in urine — A person who notices blood in their urine should contact their doctor as soon as possible. In many cases, blood in the urine is a symptom of another type of infection and is not always serious. However, it can be a sign of a more serious condition, and the patient should certainly be evaluated by a urologist. In rare cases, it is simply caused by exercising too much in a short period of time.

Difficulty urinating — If a man feels like he has to urinate but cannot go, or if it takes a while for him to be able to urinate, he may be suffering from an enlarged prostate. The prostate gland begins to swell as a person ages, so this condition is more common with men who are over the age of 40.

Impotence — Impotence is the inability to achieve an erection or maintain an erection for an adequate amount of time. Also known as erectile dysfunction, it is one of the most common complaints among male patients who visit the urologist.

Painful urination — Men who feel a burning sensation when they urinate will most likely find that it is the result of a bladder infection or a sexually-transmitted disease. It also can be caused by an infection of the urethra. In most cases, these infections can easily be treated with antibiotics and the pain subsides quickly.

Men who are experiencing any of these signs or symptoms should make an appointment with a urology expert as soon as possible. These symptoms might be a sign of a larger issue that should be treated as quickly as possible.

If nothing else, the doctor can work to minimize the symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. Note that while these conditions may be relatively common in men, it does not make them any less serious. Patients who are experiencing one or more of these conditions should certainly speak with a urologist about it.
